Located 22 kms from panaji, the capital of Goa is a very famous temple, called as Mangueshi temple. It is one of the most important and largely visited temples in Goa. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is constructed very beautifully in typical Goan Hindu temple style of architecture. Beside being famous amongst the devotees, it is one of the most wealthiest temple in Goa. The temple resides on a Hillock at Proil which is in the Ponda Taluka, surrounded with lush greenery which creates a perfect place to relax for the nature lovers. 

The temple standing ad mist the beautiful sceneries of Goa survived from the Portuguese destruction was initially located at Kushasthali (present day Cortalim). The linga was then a part of the dominions of Sultan Adil Shah was transferred from the original temple to the present location at Priol. 

In 1560, during the reign of the Marathas the Sri Manguesh temple underwent renovation many times. Additionally, in 1973 a golden kalash (holy vessel) was fitted atop the tall dome of the temple. The beautiful architecture of the Mangueshi temple represents the amazing amalgamation of Hindu, Christian and Muslim styles of construction. The temple also holds an annual Jatra in January when the deity is taken out in a palanquin and paraded in huge crowds of devotees. The temple is worth watching with illuminated dias and lights during the festival.
