Mahalaxmi Temple Bandora - Goa

zoomable

Situated 4 kms to the north of Ponda in the village on Bandora, there is a famous Shri Mahalaxmi temple with Mahalaxshmi as the presiding deity. The temple is considered the abode to the original deity of Shakti cult.

During early 19th century when the Portuguese seems to be peaceful and patient with Hindus in Bandora, Hindus built here a temple called as ‘Mahalaxmi’ referred to as the Goddess of peace. The temple is built in the hollows of valley and showcase the arched entrance at the one end with naubat khana placed on the up.

The two side of the temple are kept open with the separate shrine deva tas parivar displayed in the courtyard, plastered in red color. Entering the main building there is a domed octagonal temple tower placed with rare two domes in flattened look which is very attractive.

The floor is also having all designed mainly for dance and musical activities during the festivals. Every side of  the mandapa’s entrance is designed with the arts of Hanuman who is the God of Monkey, Garoda Vishnu’s vehicle, half eagle half man along with the doors splendidly carved in wood placed with Ganesh on them. Furthermore, there is a silver arched doorway that runs from pillared hall to sanctuary and the most attractive 24 wooden panel painted in light color and displays the pictures of Bhagvata Puran along with the story of Lord Krishna and Vishnu’s eighth incarnation.
