Goa Temples

Goa comprises of 60 percent Hindus in the total population and is thus a major land for various beautiful temples in India. Different from other temples in the country, Goa temples adopts the mixture of Nagari, Islamic and Portuguese architecture. Earlier, temples in Goa were made of black stone and are basically built in Kadamba and Hemadpanti style. But now only one such ancient Saraswat temple exist in Goa.

Goa comprises of large number of temples. Some of them enlist Mallikarjun Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, Mahalsa Temple, Mangueshi Temple, Naguesh Temple, Ramnath Temple, Saptakoteshwar Temple and Sri Devaki Krishna Temple.

Through most of hindu temples in Goa were demolished by the Portuguese inquisition and the devotees migrated to other place with the idols of their deity for the fear of persecution. Those idols were kept in makeshift shrines until the Portuguese allowed the first temple to built in Goa in 1818. Therefore, most of the Goa temples were built recently and the architecture too marks a simple acquisition. Still the architecture is very much unique in itself.
