The official capital of Goa, Panaji is the third largest city in the state. The land of serene beaches, Panaji also pronounced as Panjim is an important part of North Goa district and lies alongside the Madovi river. Though, the name of the city given by Portuguese is Pangim which means the land never floods is now known as Panjim in english. 

Panaji is one of the most attractive capitals in India. The city was declared as the capital of Goa in 1893. It is an important commercial, educational and cultural hub of Goa. Apart from that, it is also a popular tourist destination featured with some of the prominent beaches and churches. While Miraman and Dona Paula are the two main beaches in the city, Church Square or Municipal Garden with the Portuguese Baroque Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church are the respective churches.

Other tourist attractions in the city include Adil Shah Palace (or Idalcao palace), the Menezes Braganza Institute and the Central Library, the Mahalaxmi Temple, the Hanuman Temple, the Jama Masjid mosque, the Chapel of St. Sebastian and the Fontainhas. There is a place known as Kala Academy where Goa showcases it art and culture. Apart fom that, The Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on the island of Chorao and can be easily accessed from Panjim. You can also opt for boat cruises that sails up and down Mandovi river with loud music and enthusiastic dance troops. 

Talking about shopping, the best things to buy from Panaji are Cashew Nuts, local drink Feni or Port wines, traditional Goan handcrafts and some good books. Other than that,m you can also enjoy Goa carnival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Panjim. The celebrations last for three days and is full of great fun.
