Margao also known as Madgaon is the second largest city and the commercial hub of Goa. It is the capital of the southern taluka of Salcette which is the state’s richest and most fertile district. The city got its name fro the Portuguese word Mathgram which indicates the nine maths or temples that were there in the city during pre-Portugal era. Later on, these temples were all destroyed by the Portuguese and were replaces by churches.

Pimpalakatta, Anna Fonte, Holy Spirit Church and colonial mansions are the main tourist destinations in Goa. The holy spirit church in Margao city built by the Portuguese in 1675 A.D. is one of the finest examples of late-baroque architecture in Goa. The interiors of the church are decorated with gilt crystal and stucco. Apart form that, there is nearby Colva beach and Old Market to spend some rejuvenating time in the city.
