Situated 12 kms away from the north of Panaji city, Mapusa is an important commercial center of the population in the north of Goa. The names of the city is pronounced as ‘Map-sa’ after Konkan words ‘measure’ and ‘fill’. The land is known for its great commercial nature. It is believed that before the arrival of Portuguese, in fact even before the time of Marathas, Aryans and sultans,  Mapusa had its own well developed gaunkari or community farming system. The system was operated by the villages coming together to work on the community land and the ensuring benefit was shared accordingly by the works.  

The city has famous Mapusa river that flows nearby. It is in fact the tributary of Mandovi river. Earlier, Mapusa river has serves as an important gateway to transport important agriculture products and spices. The city of Mapusa is also known for its fabulous markets. People from neighboring villages come here to buy and sell all kind of products. 

Other than the markets, the capital of Bardez taluka of North Goa, Mapusa is known for its scenic beaches. Beaches that lies in the city of Mapusa are Calangue beach, Arjuna beach, Baga beach and Arambol beach. Apart from that, there are various churches and temples that makes a strong tourist base in Mapusa. These temples include - St. Jerome church, Bodgeshwar Temple and the Maruti Temple. The church feast of Our Lady of Milagres is also celebrated in Mapusa with a great fair that attracts number of people for the special wooden furniture.

The closest airport to Mapusa city in Goa is Daboplim airport and the nearest railway station is in Thivim.
