Tripurari Purnima in Goa -  Goa apart from its exotic culture is also known for its unique festive celebrations. Falls in November, Tripurari Purnima, celebrated at the end of Diwali season on the full moon night, is marked with special fiesta in the state.

The festival is associated with a renowned legend, according to which Lord Krishna defeated and killed the Demon Tripur on the day of Kartik Purnima. After the incident people celebrated lord krishna’s victory and the end of demon persecution by releasing lamps in the river. Since then it has been a tradition all over India to release small lamps in the river during the time of Diwali and especially Kartik Purnima. 

Tripurari Purnima Festivities 

The tradition is still followed all over India and is very much prevalent in Goa. Goan people even follows special traditions celebrating the festival. Adding the local distinctive touch to the celebrations, people in Goa organizes an unusual competition which is of making miniature models boats and ships that are made out of thermocol and other materials. The competition remains the highlight of the festive celebration attracting large number of spectators and participants from all over Goa. 

The festivities related to Tripurari Purnima are all celebrated at Vithalapur in Sanquelim, Goa near the Pundalik Temple. The place has river Valvanti flows making it accessible for the boat competition.

Starting up with the festivities in the evening, palanquin of Lord Vithal is brought amidst chanting and the traditional music is kept on the banks of the river until the end of the boat competition. The festival concludes by giving award prizes to the best designed boats.

Apart from the boat competition, a lot of cultural programs are organized by the popular artists including the dance performances of on Goan traditional folk dances such as Goff, Dhalo, Tonyamel, Veerbhadra, Samai Dance etc. Other than that, festival too involved the display of fireworks.
