Naraka Chaturdashi Celebration In Goa  - There are a lot of legends associated with the celebration of Diwali in India. On one hand, festival of lights, which is Diwali is celebrated owing to the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom in a largest part of India, Goa celebrates it an the famous legend on Narakasura

According to the legend, the demon king Narakasura had obtained a lot of powers which made him arrogant and he started spreading terror, cause destruction and torture people. This is when people prayed to lord Krishna for his helps. Lord Krishna Fought a little battle with narakasura and defeated the demon. It is said that Lord Krishna applied the demon's blood on his forehead as a symbol of victory. 

In order to wash away the blood of Narkasur, Lord Krishna was bathed and massaged with scented oils and thus the custom of early morning bathing with oil is being carried out on every Naraka Chaturdashi. Also, the young girls whom the demon held captive gor released and they lit lamps in their houses to mark the end of darkness and the beginning of light in Goa. The legend too is a reminder of good defeating the evil.

People in Goa, celebrates Naraka Chaturdashi in the most unique way. Every year, huge effigies of narakasura are made using dried leaves, paper and crackers. People carry them in possessions, abuses it and burn them after the dusk. One of the most important rituals followed on the celebration of Naraka Chaturdashi is of early morning bath with “Ubatan” made with paste of oil, herbs, flower and other essential beautifying ingredients. 

Just like Diwali, people lit up their home with lamps and lights on this day and enjoy Naraka Chaturdashi Celebration In Goa. People with all the family members come together to offer their prayer to Goddess Lakshmi, visits temples and then burst crackers. In Goa the people make huge effigies which are filled with grass, waste paper and crackers. A lot of money is sometimes spent on making these effigies as some institutions conduct Narkasura competitions and give away cash prizes for the best made one. The effigy of Narkasur is then taken in a procession and later burnt at dawn amidst a lot of firework display to begin the Festival of Diwali in Goa
