Diwali Celebrations in Goa - Although, goa was colonized by Portuguese for a very long time, the state still holds a strongly exhibits the influence of Indian god and goddesses in various different ways. Like any other place in India, Goa too celebrates Diwali, the festival of lights with huge pomp and show. Though Diwali celebrates the return of lord Rama to his kingdom, people in Goa however celebrate it for different reasons.

As per a well known legend in Goa, the demon Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna. Narakasura is known to have terrorized the locals, killed citizens of the town and exploited them. The day when Krishna came to the rescue of these people falls a day before Lakshmi Puja. Goans celebrate Diwali mainly on the Naraka Chaturdashi, which at other places in India is celebrated as Choti Diwali.

The state celebrates it through burning down the effigies of Narakasura, made with fried leaves paper and crackers. People in Goa carry effigies in possession while abusing the demon and burn it post dusk. Early morning, on the Diwali day after burning the narakasura effigies, the menfolk return to their home and get massaged by their wife and mother with the oil called Utnem. It is the mixture sandalwood, scented oils and other fragrant ingredients. Women too applies the same mixture for the bath. The family members then offer prayers to Lakshmi Mata, visits local temples and exchange sweets with loved ones and enjoy Diwali Celebrations in Goa.

All the villages in and around Goa organize fairs and feasts, with the view to celebrate this festival with immense fervor. People come together for celebrating the festival and enjoy bursting Firecrackers with an enthusiasm to a whole new level.
